The film is the dying wish of Japanese-American animation director Jimmy Murakami, who passed away in 2004 at 80 years old. Murakami is known for the animated adaptations of When the Wind Blows and The Snowman, both books by Raymond Briggs. During World War II, Murakami was imprisoned at the Tule Lake War Relocation Center internment camp. He had told friends that he wanted his last work to be themed on Hiroshima. Murakami had wanted the film to be based on the life's work of historian Shigeaki Mori, who has spent more than 40 years gathering details on the 12 U.S. bomber crew members and prisoners of war who were killed during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.

Mori is himself a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, and is the subject of a recent documentary titled Paper Lanterns, which launched digitally and on home video on August 7. Hiroshima: The Last Summer Rose, based on Mori's books, will tell a story of an American prisoner of war and a Japanese nursing student who fall in love, but are torn apart by the atomic bombing. The title comes from the Irish folk song "The Last Rose of Summer," which is itself the basis for the famous Japanese song "Niwa no Chigusa."

It's been several years and Kyosuke Kasuga is now 19. A mysterious phone call warns him of oncoming cars but he doesn't listen. Ironically, he gets hit by a car and because of his telepathic abilities, gets sent three years into the future. His 22 year old future self is now a photographer who is lost in Bosnia and believed to be dead.

Kyosuke must find his 22 year old future self and restore himself, the 19 year old, to his correct time. Along the way he reunites with Hikaru who is now a professional and famous dancer. Madoka is also there, distraught over both Kyosuke, the 22 year old, going missing in Bosnia and Kyosuke, the 19 year old, getting hit by a car.

The battle at Koufu Castle has been lost, the Furies are no longer restrained by daylight, and while the individual members of the Shinsengumi still survive, the links that bound them together have been torn and shattered.

As Harada, Shinpachi, and Saito try to fight their way out of Koufu, Chizuru holds true to her oath to Hijikata, standing guard over Kondou, while he and Okita fight to recover from their gunshot wounds.

This movie is an alternative version of the TV series; it is composed of the two 2007 OVAs, edited to improve the pacing of the plot, and an extra segment akin to a TV episode where the cast are given the task of studying flowers.

The plot has several differences to the TV series, most important being Sirius's death at the beginning, Apollo's different childhood and the more marked focus on the events of 12000 years ago, particularly Apollonius' death and Reika's previous incarnation's involvement.

A theatrical film version of Madhouse's Aoi Bungaku Series anime. The film will re-edit the four episodes based on Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku) novel, which have character designs inspired by manga artist and novel illustrator Takeshi Obata. This "director's cut" will include new "navigation" footage which is being created specifically for the film with narrator Masato Sakai.
